| Neville
Garden
former Music Critic (Scotland on Sunday) and broadcaster
"Quite the most arresting work on the programme – atmospheric,
skilfully contrasted pieces revealed an intimate and affectionate
knowledge of the guitar."
I met Neville for the first time at the premiere of "Four
Dialogues for Two Guitars" in a concert by The Scottish Guitar
Duo during the Edinburgh Festival. His scathing comments about some
of the pieces played in the first half made me apprehensive about
his reaction to my piece, which was on in the second half. After
the concert, he was nowhere to be seen and I assumed the worst.
However he phoned the next day to say how much he had enjoyed it,
and sent me a note from which the quote is taken. He was actively
trying to get me a commission for a piece for String Quartet and
Guitar when he was tragically killed in a road accident.
